Weaving with
tablets has been done since at least the 6th century BC. Tablets in
period could be made of wood, bone, leather, or playing cards. I
have 2 packs of wooden cards, one large and one small. My first
packs of cards were made from cardboard milk containers. They
work well and can have the threading patterns drawn on to each
card. Tablet

Bliauts (a long full garment from 12th Century Europe) are worn
with a girdle which goes around the waist, crosses in back, and
ties below the abdomen. I have made many tablet woven belts in
various colors to be worn with bliauts.
Tablet woven bands were also used as trim for garments.
Some bands had inscriptions woven into them, usually prayers and
quotations from holy writings, or the maker or bearer's name. I
made a favor for my lord with my name woven into it.
Fabrics used in period included: wool, gold, silver, linen, hair,
and silk. I have used cotton for most of my bands.
